Sora Farm Newsletter-Vol. 36

Last couple of weeks, our plants (veggies and weeds alike) have been growing fast with nice mix of sunshine and rain. Summer market, farm gate sale, and delivery to Ground up and Nature spirit started. In order to keep our energy up, we made “Ohagi”, Japanese traditional sweets.

“Ohagi” is sticky rice (mochi) balls coated with sweet red bean (azuki) paste (the dark red one in the photo), or roasted soybean flour mixed with sugar (yellow one). Originally, they were eaten at buddhism events as red beans were believed to ward off evil spirits. This was our first time making them and we will probably make often from now on as they are sweet and filling but not heavy on our stomachs.

Soybeans we sowed on May 20 have sprouted. We are hoping to have edamame to harvest. Last year we had some but not enough to sell, so we cooked and shared with some lucky customers on Wednesdays at farm gate sale. Let’s see how it goes this year…

Our farm gate sale is at 10am-1pm every Wednesday. This week, we have komatsuna, mizuna, chard, 3 kinds of lettuce (see photos), kale, collard, spinach, radish, turnip, dill and cilantro. Price is $4 per bunch except turnips. Turnips are $5 per bunch.

Please place an order by the end of Tuesday through sorafarmveggie@gmail.com, or just drop by and let us pick what you would like. Address is 1820 Seymour road, Gabriola Island.

We can also prepare salad mix if you send us an order by the end of Monday. Price is $6 per bag.

As usual, we are at AGI market on Saturday at 10am – 2pm. For pre-order of our sourdough bread and koji bread, please click below and fill in the form, or send us an email to sorafarmveggie@gmail.com.

Wednesday market at AGI hall starts on June 11th. We will post more details next week.

Enjoy a sunny warm week!
