We had our first apples!

We planted four apple trees three year ago. This spring, two of them had flowers, then one of them started to have fruits, lots of them. We were so excited and waited and waited for them to become bigger. They didn’t get much bigger and started to change color. We checked the variety, and found that it was a crabapple… When we were in Toronto, crabapples were everywhere as roadside trees. I tried once and they tasted really really sour and tart, so I always thought crabapples were good only for jams and not for eating. I hesitated, but picked one fruit from our tree and ate it, and it was amazingly sweet and delicious. The variety is “John Downey”. If you ever want an apple tree and don’t want to wait too long to get fruits, this might be a good option.
Do you know this plant?

This is “myoga”, or “Japanese ginger”. Around this time of year, flower buds come out from the ground and that is what we eat. They have slightly sour, refreshing flavor and considered a delicacy for summer. Usually, sliced/minced and eaten raw as a condiment or added to soup. We planted a few stems we brought from Toronto, and waiting for them to spread so that we can introduce this unique food item to our clients. They spread by underground stems, very slowly among rocks…
