Sora Farm Newsletter-Vol. 50

Is there a competition for the smallest pumpkin?

These are “dwarf kuri pumpkins”. A few years ago, I ate some at my friend’s home and I fell in love with the sweetness and creaminess of it. I asked for the seeds and kept them, and planted this year. They are supposed to be smaller than regular kuri pumpkins, but, well, not this small… and in case you don’t know, my hand (in the photo) is pretty small…

We waited for weeks, hoping that they get bigger, but the leaves and vines have died down and we decided to harvest last week.

3 pumpkins, pan roasted and just enough as a side dish for 2 people. They still tasted good, but this is not very productive… one more thing we need to try and improve next year…

This year’s biggest (and unexpected) success was eggplants. The variety is called “Shinkansen” (bullet train). They are soft and sweet, good for stir fry, roasting or grilling. They taste especially nice when cooked with tomatoes. Click here for the recipe of “Tomato eggplant with eggs”.
